MMEA Intercepted Vietnamese Fishing Vessels in the Waters of Mantani Island, Sabah, Malaysia

On August 17,2020 at 16:45 Malaysian time, Malaysian Maritime Law Enforcement Agency (MMEA) intercepted a fishing vessel registered in Vietnam that was encroaching on Sabah waters and detained 25 of its crew in waters around 29 Nm northwest of Mantanani Island.

The state Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) intercepted a Vietnam-registered fishing vessel that encroached Sabah waters and detained its 25 crew members at 29 nautical miles northwest of Mantanani Island at 4.45pm.

Sabah and Labuan MMEA Director First Admiral (Maritime) Mohd Rosli Abdullah said a maritime patrol boat detained the vessel along with its 25 undocumented Vietnamese crew members aged between 18 and 50 during “Operation Naga Timur” and “Operation Sejahtera”.

He said the foreign fishing boat did not have neither documents or permission from the Director of Fisheries Malaysia to carry out fishing activities in Malaysian waters.

“Upon inspection, the team found four tonnes of various fishes kept on the vessel.
