MMEA seizes four tankers in Johor waters, two are Singapore-registered vessels

23 May 2023

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Saturday (20 May) reportedly said it detained four tankers for illegally anchoring in the eastern Johor waters in the period of six days, according to local media outlets.

Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone MMEA deputy director commander Mohd Najib Sam reportedly stated the four ships, comprising two registered in Singapore, an Indonesian-registered vessel and another registered in Monrovia in Liberia, were seized last week.

The first Singapore-registered ship, transporting liquified petroleum gas, was seized on 13 May at 17.7 nautical miles east of Tanjung Sedili Besar while the second Singapore-registered vessel was seized at 13.2 nautical miles east of Tanjung Siang two days later.

The Indonesian-registered tanker was detained at 12.8 nautical miles north northeast of Tanjung Balau on 17 May, while the Monrovia-registered transporter ship was detained the day after for anchoring without permit at 30.5 nautical miles east of Tanjung Sedili Kechil.

During initial investigation by MMEA, the vessels’ captains failed to produce permits allowing them to anchor in Malaysian waters, an offence under Section 491B(1)(L) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.

Najib added MMEA has seized 28 vessels since the beginning of the year for illegally anchoring in Malaysian waters.
